The City Nature Challenge (CNC) has grown into an international event, motivating people around the world to find and document wildlife in their own cities. Run by the Community Science teams at the California Academy of Sciences and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (NHM), the CNC is an annual four-day (April 25th-28th) global bioblitz at the end of April, where cities are in a collaboration-meets-friendly-competition to see what can be accomplished when we all work toward a common goal.
Download and use the iNaturalist app onto your phone to participate and join millions around the world! There will be stations located around Discovery Center to help with your observations and answer questions. Feel free to loan out binoculars for bird watching, and/or use our guides located in the Visitor Center to identify other organisms. Live, local results will be projected onto our TV! Want to get involved in other sites around Fairmount Park? Check out their CNC page on iNaturalist for updates.
Also: Pennsylvania Master Naturalist Educators Carol Cunningham and Beth Wanamaker fly into the world of birds! We’ll dive into what makes birds unique from other animals and each other, as well as swoop into how and where to spot our feathered friends all around us. We’ll do all of this while having some fun with interactive games and crafts along the way. While the content is designed for younger children and their families, all are welcome to participate!
