Discovery Day- Canoeing & Conservation and more!

9am-10:30am DVOC Bird Tour
Join Audubon Mid-Atlantic and the Delaware Valley Ornithological Club (DVOC) as we tour the reservoir for migrating birds. Every year billions of birds come back ion to the region looking for nesting territory. We'll see what species have already entered the area and set up nests and look for the late spring arrivals.
Binoculars available for loan.
The Delaware Valley Ornithological Club (DVOC) is one of the oldest ornithology organizations in the United States. Founded in 1890, the club has held regular meetings at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia for over 125 years, and has published the periodical Cassinia since 1901. Membership is open to any dues paying person with an interest in birds. The club organizes birding field trips throughout the Delaware River valley region, including a dedicated year-round trip schedule within the city limits of Philadelphia (BirdPhilly). 10am-12pm Vetri Community Partnership Mobile Kitchen
The Mobile Teaching Kitchen brings culinary and nutrition education to your neighborhood! Our educators will set up in front of the truck to demonstrate a simple, delicious, vegetable-forward recipe, hand out samples to anyone who would like to try, and send participants home with a recipe card for the dish.

10am-12pm Mussel Maniacs
Audubon Mid-Atlantic’s monthly freshwater mussel measuring event! Sign up to measure mussels and the water chemistry of the reservoir. This community science data will be used to help guide our mussel propagation program: growing freshwater mussels and placing them within the Delaware River watershed for filtration and cleaner water for all. Registration is required in advance, please fill out this form to sign up. Observation of the mussel measuring is open to all visitors! Please come dressed for the weather as this is a rain or shine event.

10am-4pm Canoeing and Conservation
Over 130 species of birds have visited the Strawberry Mansion reservoir since it was decommissioned. Now that nature has taken over the space, we’ll be going out in the canoes to find out exactly what draws them to this special place. We will be fitting everyone with paddles, Personal Floatation Device(PFD), and binoculars. Join us for the search for flora and fauna that call the reservoir home. No canoeing experience or bird/ plant knowledge required! Participants will learn tips and proper canoe technique from our Outward Bound Instructors.
Canoeing is first come, first served and registration begins at 10am.
Canoe times are:
10:30am, 11:45am, 1:30pm & 2:45pm and sessions last about one hour. Bring your friends and family to fit 2-3 participants per canoe. All participants must wear their personal flotation device (safety jacket) while in the water. Paddles, canoes, and safety jackets will be provided.
Age requirements: Ages 8 – Adult. However, participants 8-12 years of age must be in the canoe with a responsible adult. All participants must sign a risk & liability waiver. An adult must be present to sign for minors.
