I’m writing to announce a series of important transitions at the Philadelphia Outward Bound School.
First, longtime Executive Director Katie Newsom Pastuszek has departed Philadelphia Outward Bound School. We will miss Katie but she isn’t going far. Katie assumed a new role as Chief Advancement Officer at Outward Bound USA in July. We look forward to continuing to work with her as she embarks on her new adventure. While we’re sad to see Katie leave, I’m excited to welcome Meg Wise as Philadelphia Outward Bound School’s new Executive Director in September.
Meg has extensive experience with the Philadelphia nonprofit and educational community. She is coming to us after serving seven years as Executive Director of the Smith Memorial Playground and Playhouse.
The Board of Trustees asked Meg to join the Philadelphia Outward Bound School after conducting a national search. We were particularly impressed by her track record of success at Smith. In just a few years, Meg transformed the 118-year-old institution, doubling its staff size, budget resources and audience and forging new partnerships with the nearby North Philadelphia community. She also spearheaded a $13.5 million capital campaign to expand Smith’s facilities.
We look forward to bringing Meg’s drive and determination to bear on our efforts to serve our region’s youth, to change lives through challenge and discovery.
In that work, Meg will be building on a strong foundation laid by Katie, who came to the Philadelphia Outward Bound School as its first full-time employee and has been integral in building up our organization into a regional and national leader.
During her tenure, Katie forged a groundbreaking partnership with the School District of Philadelphia, providing leadership and character development opportunities for students across the city. Last year, this partnership expanded to work specifically with the district’s Ninth Grade Academy schools, located in some of the city’s most underserved communities.
In September, we will celebrate the opening of The Discovery Center, the fulfillment of a years-long effort, led by Katie to construct a new home that meets our growing needs. The Discovery Center represents the beginning of a new partnership with the National Audubon Society that will enable us to enhance our program offerings while opening up a previously closed section of Fairmount Park to the community.
We have full confidence that Meg will immediately jump in and build on these successes, helping us write the next chapter of Philadelphia Outward Bound School history. We look forward to her leadership and distinct mark on the future of the Philadelphia Outward Bound School.
Please join me in welcoming Meg to the Philadelphia Outward Bound School family.
